source: Tragedy strikes a family in Moss Bluff after their 14-year old son dies while sick with the flu.

Jonathon Fontenot of Moss Bluff died last night after being airlifted to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital around 9:30 PM.

“I don’t know how to describe it, I’m such in shock,” says Chris Fontenot, Jonathon’s father. “I can’t believe that my son is gone. ”

Chris says his son Jonathon was healthy and well just a few days ago.

“In the evenings after school you’d see him right here running around playing ball in the yard,” says Chris.

Chris says Jonathon began experiencing symptoms of the flu on Saturday.

“He went to the doctor yesterday and was diagnosed with the flu,” says Chris. “They started him on a typical flu treatment.”

Shortly after his mother put him to bed, Jonathon’s younger sister found him on the floor where he was not breathing.

“He was airlifted to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital where they continued CPR or artificial breathing,” says Chris. “Then he just never pulled out of it, we don’t know what happened.”

School situation update in the United States (US):

This is made worse by people returning to schools 24 hours after symptoms: adults can shed virus for days, to a week after their symptoms. Children can spread it for much longer than adults, therefore highly infectious kids are sitting in classrooms.

Connecticut: A suspected wave of swine flu hit Litchfield County on Tuesday, with the first public school closing announced in Region 10. Superintendent Alan Beitman said 765 of the district’s 2,810 students were out sick by early Tuesday afternoon, and many more were falling ill: 40 students at Lewis S. Mills High School became ill during the school day Tuesday. When parents began calling to report cases of pneumonia and bronchitis, Beitman, consulting with state and local health officials, decided to shut the school system down until Monday.

Chicago: The number of students staying home sick with the flu is multiplying nationwide and normally quiet school nurses’ offices suddenly look like big city emergency rooms, packed with students too ill to finish the day. The federal government has urged schools to close because of the swine flu only as a last resort. But schools are closing by the dozens as officials say they are being hit so hard and so fast by the H1N1 virus that they feel shutting down for a few days is the only feasible option.

source: Health officials confirm that a 13-year-old boy from Toronto has died after contracting the H1N1 virus.

Evan Frustaglio died Monday after developing a high fever over the weekend. The boy was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital in west-end Toronto Monday afternoon after his condition deteriorated rapidly and he collapsed at home, his father told reporters.

Paul Frustaglio told reporters that a coroner determined his son died of the H1N1 virus. Health officials confirmed the finding late Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for Toronto public health said officials would hold a news conference Tuesday afternoon to discuss an increase in flu activity in the city.

The boy’s mother is a nurse and the whole family was planning on getting the flu shot, his father told CTV Toronto.

Evan was in London, Ont. playing in a hockey tournament when he fell ill. He was sent home Sunday after going to a walk-in clinic with symptoms of the flu.

Friends say the Mississauga North Stars player complained of a sore neck and throat during dinner Saturday night.
